I love how it smells, how it feels, and how it tastes. I can’t imagine a world without its deliciousness. Luckily, it’s been around tens of thousands of years - and it’s not goin’ anywhere anytime soon.

I always have to get there early, and I always whisper a little prayer as the automatic doors slide open that they haven’t sold out of favorite loaves of Cole’s Peace Bakery bread. Whether it’s the support system of my sandwich, or simply topped with butter, I’ve loved these wonderful breads for over a decade.

Artisan bread is exactly what its name suggests: bread that is crafted, rather than mass produced. Baked in small batches rather than on a vast assembly line, artisan bread differs from prepackaged supermarket loaves in a number of ways. Special attention to ingredients, process, and a return to the fundamentals of the age-old bread-making tradition set artisan bread apart from soft, preservative-laden commercial breads. I don’t sound biased do I?

Their usual delivery guy is Wayne, the fastest delivery man on the island, and yes, he will make sure you have ALL of your side dishes. (Thanks Wayne!). Joined by the effusive Miss Eliza, we proceeded to order a cornucopia of artisan delights.

It was creamy and delicious, rich, and much more than I could eat. I ordered the Cobba-Lotta - roasted turkey, smoked bacon, avocado, bleu cheese, boiled eggs, lettuce, tomato and red onions with a raspberry vinaigrette on crispy ciabatta bread. Any fan of a cobb salad will love this!

Genoa salami, cappicola and mortadella with hot sweet peppers, lettuce, onions, tomato and oil & vinegar on a baquette and topped with provolone. Great sandwich! The peppers pack a flavor punch and the melted cheese on top pulls everything together.

A single bite of one of their desserts for you to enjoy. It’s always the perfect last bite of my meal. Today however, we went all out. I ordered a chocolate-peanut butter muffin top, and a mango triangle. The muffin top was like a warm, delicious, fluffy, chocolate chip cookie, and the mango triangle...well that was foodgasm right there. It’s like a wedge of warm mango pie - mango filling, flaky pie crust, and topped with a honey-oat granola topping. (Droooool!)

About the Fest

Traditionally October has been a slow time for tourism in the Keys, but since its inception, Fantasy Fest® has continually boosted the economy by filling up hotel rooms and inundating local businesses, restaurants, and bars during this time period. The tremendous influx of visitors during the ten days of the festival sustains the local economy until the holiday season begins. Fantasy Fest is committed to extending the time that visitors stay by encouraging the creation of diverse events throughout the entire ten days. The opportunity to show off the imaginative and resourceful spirit that defines the Keys excites participants as well as the thousands that are drawn to the Keys.

Frank Romano, a board member of the Tourist Development Association of Monroe County, Inc. (TDA), and a founding member of Fantasy Fest, gives us a personal introduction into the conception of Fantasy Fest. He shares the early vision of Joe Liszka, President of the TDA, giving us a glimpse of how this good-natured revelry came to be.

"In 1978, on Halloween Day, Joe Liszka asked me to accompany him to the intersection of Front and Duval Streets. He asked me to look up Duval Street and tell him what I saw. "What was I supposed to see?" "No cars moving, no people walking, lots of store fronts boarded up because the retailers take their vacation in this slow season?"

"How is the weather," he asked. "Well, it is a typical beautiful day in Paradise, warm, with bright sunshine." "That's what's wrong," he told me. " Here it is the most beautiful weather day of the season and the town is deserted. Workers are laid off. Business owners have a tough time paying their expenses. It is a disaster season for the Key West economy."

"I understand", I replied, "but what can we do about it?" "We need a fest, a carnival, a celebration, something that will entice people to change our moribund season to one of great fun; a party that will bring many people to understand that this season is one of our best," he replied.

Liszka's creative inspiration was the birth of Fantasy Fest. Now, Halloween is the busiest day of the year with thousands of people visiting our town. Fantasy Fest week produces the most revenue of any week in the year. A moribund season has become our best. Thank you, Joseph Liszka."

The galleon sank in 1622 approximately 35 miles southwest of Key West.

Fisher's son Kim Fisher and grandson Sean Fisher, who direct the ongoing search for still-missing Atocha artifacts and treasures, spearhead the festival each year.

Scheduled events begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at the Schooner Wharf Bar, 202 William St. in Key West's Historic Seaport. On tap are games recalling Mel Fisher's exuberant lifestyle, a treasure-themed bikini contest and authentic treasure prizes.

From 3-9 p.m. Friday, a street carnival celebrating Fisher is to take place in the 200 block of Key West's Duval Street with live concert entertainment, a silent auction, rollicking games and more.

Saturday, July 16, a Midnight Gambler Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament salutes Fisher's adventurous spirit. The fun is set for 8:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. aboard Sunset Watersports' Party Cat catamaran.

Sunday's schedule features the 1 p.m. presentation of the Mel Fisher Lifetime Achievement Award to Professor David Bederman of Emory Law School. Bederman has been instrumental in the decades-long legal struggle for salvors' rights to explore and recover mankind's maritime heritage from the sea. The presentation takes place in the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum's courtyard, 200 Greene St.

The festival's highlight is a 2 p.m. reunion of the "golden crew" that searched for the Atocha with Fisher. The reunion is scheduled at The Bull, located at the corner of Duval and Caroline streets in Key West's historic downtown.

Event information: www.melfisher.com or 305-296-6534Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13903142998259569480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1378327763447399331.post-84032689537331096832011-07-04T12:01:00.000-04:002011-07-04T12:01:58.095-04:00Independence Day Fireworks!Annual 4th of July Fireworks!

Today, July 4th at 9:00pm at White Street Pier!

See you there!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13903142998259569480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1378327763447399331.post-88275546348955888222011-05-22T15:22:00.000-04:002011-05-22T15:22:12.208-04:00Flagler Bicycle TourFlagler Bicycle Tour.

Saturday, June 4th.

9:00am-12:00pm.

Location: Casa Marina Resort.

Phone: (305) 293-7658.

Informal bike ride highlighling Henry Flagler's legacy in Key West.
